Traders and tourism operators warn of looming losses as new government restrictions threaten Egypt’s vibrant nightlife economy.
A newly introduced government curfew in Egypt is drawing strong reactions from business owners, particularly in tourism-driven areas, as authorities attempt to rein in rising energy costs.
Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly announced that shops, restaurants, and shopping malls must now close by 9:00 pm on weekdays, with a slight extension to 10:00 pm on weekends.
The directive, expected to last for one month, is part of efforts to curb the country’s escalating energy bill, which has more than doubled in recent months due to regional instability.
However, many business operators in Cairo say the policy could severely impact their livelihoods, especially those who rely on evening patronage from tourists.
Ahmed Ali, a bazaar owner, expressed frustration over the timing of the restriction, noting that peak business hours often begin late in the evening.
He questioned how businesses are expected to operate effectively when tourists typically arrive just before closing time.
Similarly, jewelry shop owner Remon Wagieh warned that the curfew would have far-reaching consequences across multiple sectors.
According to him, Egypt’s nightlife culture plays a significant role in attracting tourists, many of whom prefer to explore and spend during late hours.
Industry players argue that the restriction could reduce consumer spending, weaken the tourism experience, and put pressure on workers whose incomes depend on extended business hours.
The government, however, maintains that the decision is necessary to manage the country’s energy consumption amid rising fuel costs driven by disruptions linked to regional conflicts.
Officials have also reassured that major tourist destinations will not be heavily affected.
Despite these assurances, many business owners remain concerned that limiting evening activities could dampen economic activity in a country where nightlife is a key driver of commerce and tourism.
