Google Invests ₦2.8 Billion To Boost Nigeria’s AI Drive

Google has invested ₦2.8 billion to accelerate Nigeria’s Artificial Intelligence (AI) initiatives, aiming to drive innovation and nurture local talent in the country’s tech ecosystem.

This funding is part of Google’s broader $5.8 million commitment to digital skills across Sub-Saharan Africa.

The announcement was made by Matt Brittin, Google’s President for Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, at an event in Abuja held in partnership with Nigeria’s Ministry of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy.

Minister Bosun Tijani highlighted the importance of this support, stating that Google’s investment will help bridge employment gaps and address economic challenges in Nigeria. “This partnership underscores our dedication to making Nigeria a leader in AI innovation, empowering Nigerians with essential digital skills,” Tijani remarked.

Brittin outlined that the funding will support AI training initiatives led by Data Science Nigeria and the Federal Ministry. This includes a program to equip 20,000 young Nigerians with advanced skills in data science and AI, train 25,000 teachers, and introduce 125,000 students to AI concepts. Additionally, 10 Nigerian AI startups will receive ₦100 million, up to $3.5 million in Google Cloud Credits, and mentorship from Google engineers.

Olumide Balogun, Google’s Director for West Africa, emphasized the importance of leveraging technology to create opportunities for youth, foster sustainable development, and enhance education and employment pathways across Nigeria.
