I Didn’t Want Penalties Vs Germany – Bonmati

Barcelona midfielder Aitana Bonmati has said that her extra-time winner against Germany in the Euro 2025 semi-final was no fluke.

She recently revealed that the goal happened because her coach informed the team about the gap that was available to be exploited.

Speaking during an interview with the press, Bonmati shared that Spain’s goalkeeper coach already pointed out how the German goalie sometimes leaves her near post open.

According to her, she didn’t think twice about shooting when she had the chance because she dreaded the crucial match getting decided via penalties.

“Yes, the truth is that we had studied it. Well, Marisa, the goalkeeper coach, had told me that she (Berger) made certain movements and that sometimes she left the near post clear and that’s how it was. I didn’t think about (taking that shot) twice because I didn’t want it to reach penalties,” she said.

Bonmati further noted that scoring a goal to send her nation to the final feels very special, stressing that beating Germany is a very big deal.

The Spaniard concluded by saying that reaching the final of the Euros is a historic moment for her and her teammates.

“Scoring in a game like this one is super special and if I can help the team writing history, it’s very special.

For the first time we have beaten Germany with the women’s national team, and for the first time we are in the final of the Euros. We have written history,” she added.
