The Federal Government has declared Friday, May 1, 2026, a public holiday to commemorate International Workers’ Day, widely known as May Day.

The declaration was announced by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, on behalf of the government. In a statement issued on Thursday, he congratulated Nigerian workers and acknowledged their contributions to national development across various sectors of the economy.


The ministry stated that the holiday is set aside to honor workers in both the public and private sectors for their role in sustaining economic activities, boosting productivity, and supporting national growth.


Tunji-Ojo commended Nigerian workers for their resilience, dedication, and commitment to duty despite prevailing economic and social challenges. He noted that the workforce remains a critical pillar in driving government policies and achieving long-term development goals.


The minister also reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to improving workers’ welfare through policies focused on better working conditions, enhanced welfare packages, and job security.
He urged Nigerians to remain peaceful, law-abiding, and patriotic during the celebration, while encouraging workers to reflect on the values of hard work, discipline, and national unity.
