Governor Seyi Makinde has confirmed the killing of a secondary school teacher abducted alongside several other victims in Oyo State, describing the incident as tragic and unacceptable while assuring residents that efforts are ongoing to rescue those still in captivity. The governor made the disclosure amid rising public concern over worsening insecurity and cases of kidnapping across parts of the state. He said security agencies have intensified operations to track down the abductors and secure the safe release of the remaining victims.
According to available reports, the victims were reportedly abducted by armed men while travelling through a rural area in Oyo State. Sources said the attackers intercepted the vehicle conveying the victims before taking them into nearby forests. Family members and local residents later raised alarm after communication with the victims ceased. Among those kidnapped was a teacher whose death was later confirmed after the abductors allegedly shot the victim during captivity.

The killing has sparked outrage among residents, education stakeholders, and civil society groups who have called for stronger security measures to protect citizens, especially commuters and workers in vulnerable communities. Reacting to the development, Governor Makinde expressed condolences to the family of the deceased teacher and assured the public that the state government would not relent in confronting criminal elements operating within the state.
The governor stated that intelligence-driven operations involving the police, local security networks, and other law enforcement agencies were ongoing to locate the kidnappers and rescue the remaining captives unharmed. “We will continue to do everything within our power to ensure that those still being held are rescued safely and that those responsible for this crime are brought to justice,” the governor said. Security sources disclosed that operatives have expanded surveillance across forest corridors and remote communities believed to be used as hideouts by kidnappers. Additional deployments were also reportedly made to strengthen security presence along major highways and vulnerable rural routes.
The incident has renewed concerns over the growing wave of kidnappings targeting travelers, students, farmers, and professionals across parts of Nigeria. In recent years, armed groups operating in forest regions have increasingly carried out abductions for ransom, creating fear among residents and affecting economic activities in several communities. Community leaders in affected areas have urged both federal and state authorities to adopt more aggressive security strategies, including improved intelligence gathering, aerial surveillance, and increased deployment of security personnel to rural communities.
Residents also called for stronger collaboration between local vigilante groups and formal security agencies to improve response time during emergencies. Education stakeholders condemned the killing of the teacher, describing it as a painful attack on the teaching profession and on citizens contributing to national development. Some teachers’ associations have appealed to government authorities to strengthen protection for educators working in remote and underserved areas.
Meanwhile, security agencies have appealed to the public to provide useful information that could assist ongoing rescue operations. Authorities also advised residents to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious movements or activities within their communities. The Oyo State Government reiterated its commitment to improving security across the state and maintaining pressure on criminal networks threatening public safety.
As rescue operations continue, many residents remain anxious over the fate of the remaining abducted victims, while calls continue to mount for urgent and lasting solutions to Nigeria’s worsening kidnapping crisis.
