EFCC Has Made Several Arrests Over Vote-Buying, Secured Convictions – Olukoyede

The Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukoyede, has disclosed that the anti-graft agency has arrested several individuals across the country for vote-buying and other electoral offences, with a number of convictions already secured as part of efforts to safeguard Nigeria’s democratic process.

Olukoyede said the commission remains committed to tackling electoral corruption, warning that the increasing influence of money in politics poses a significant threat to credible elections and good governance.

Speaking on the commission’s efforts to combat electoral malpractice, the EFCC chairman expressed concern over the growing commercialization of elections, noting that politicians who spend huge sums to secure political offices often view governance as an opportunity to recover their investments rather than serve the public.

According to him, vote-buying has become one of the most serious challenges confronting Nigeria’s electoral system, undermining the principles of free, fair and transparent elections. He revealed that the commission had carried out several operations across different states during recent elections, leading to the arrest of politicians, party agents, electoral officials and voters allegedly involved in vote-buying, vote-selling and other forms of electoral misconduct.

Olukoyede noted that investigations and prosecutions arising from these operations have already resulted in multiple convictions, demonstrating the commission’s resolve to ensure that electoral offenders are held accountable. The EFCC boss cited recent enforcement actions undertaken by the agency, including operations during elections in various parts of the country where operatives arrested suspects allegedly engaged in the distribution and receipt of cash inducements aimed at influencing voters.

He said the agency also recovered large sums of money suspected to have been earmarked for vote-buying during some of the elections, stressing that the commission would not relent in its efforts to curb the practice.According to Olukoyede, electoral corruption goes beyond violating electoral laws, describing it as a financial crime that falls squarely within the mandate of the EFCC.

He explained that the commission has strengthened collaboration with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), security agencies and other relevant stakeholders to monitor elections and prevent the misuse of money to manipulate electoral outcomes.

The EFCC chairman warned politicians and other actors involved in electoral malpractice that the commission would continue to deploy its resources to detect, investigate and prosecute offenders, regardless of their status or political affiliations. He also urged Nigerians to reject financial inducements during elections, saying that accepting money in exchange for votes compromises the integrity of the electoral process and ultimately undermines democratic governance.

Olukoyede maintained that credible elections remain essential to producing accountable leadership and fostering national development, adding that citizens have a critical role to play in protecting the sanctity of the ballot. He reaffirmed the commission’s determination to sustain its nationwide crackdown on vote-buying and other electoral offences ahead of future elections, warning that anyone found violating the law would face prosecution.

The EFCC, he said, remains focused on ensuring that elections are decided by the will of the people rather than by the highest bidder, as part of broader efforts to strengthen democracy and promote transparency in the country’s political system.
