Human rights lawyer and activist Deji Adeyanju has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to urgently address what he describes as growing threats to Nigeria’s democratic system.

Adeyanju expressed concern over recent political developments, warning that there are signs of deliberate attempts to silence opposition voices. According to him, democracy can only function properly in an environment where political competition is free, fair, and protected.
He further alleged that some individuals are using legal and institutional processes to weaken opposition parties ahead of the 2027 general elections. He cited increasing pressure on major opposition platforms such as the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as part of a wider pattern that could push Nigeria toward a one-party system.
Adeyanju warned that sidelining opposition groups could harm the country’s democratic reputation and increase the risk of political instability if the situation is not urgently addressed.
He also called on former leaders and key national stakeholders to speak up and defend democratic values, stressing that protecting political diversity is a collective responsibility at this crucial moment.
