“I’m Not Afraid” — Seun Okinbaloye Stands Firm Amid Wike Controversy, Defends Press Freedom

Seun Okinbaloye has stated firmly that he will not be intimidated following the controversy sparked by remarks from Nyesom Wike, while expressing gratitude to Nigerians and organisations that have shown him support.
Speaking during a Sunday broadcast on Channels Television, Okinbaloye acknowledged the wave of solidarity from civil society groups, viewers, and both local and international bodies.

On his safety, he disclosed that he has received assurances from the Department of State Services and also confirmed that the minister reached out to clarify that his earlier remarks were not intended as conveyed.
Despite this, the journalist cautioned against the use of provocative language, emphasizing that threats—direct or implied—have no place in a democratic society, particularly during an election period when public confidence and safety must be protected.
He warned that such statements, if misinterpreted, could create dangerous situations and be exploited by individuals with harmful intentions.

Reaffirming his position, Okinbaloye declared, “I’m not afraid, and I will never be intimidated,” adding that ethical journalism remains a responsibility to the public, not a favour to those in power.
He maintained that he will continue to ask critical questions and hold leaders accountable, regardless of the consequences.
The controversy arose after comments made by Wike during a media chat in Abuja, reacting to Okinbaloye’s analysis of internal issues within the African Democratic Congress and broader opposition politics ahead of the 2027 elections. Okinbaloye had raised concerns about the possibility of a one-party state—remarks the minister criticised as inappropriate for a journalist.
Although Wike later clarified that his statement was not meant as a threat, his aide, Lere Olayinka, described the comment as exaggerated and made in anger, insisting there was no intent to harm.
However, Amnesty International Nigeria condemned the remarks, calling them reckless and warning that such rhetoric could endanger
