Prince Harry Back In UK As Security Row Intensifies

Prince Harry returned to the United Kingdom on Monday for the official one-year countdown to the 2027 Invictus Games, but the visit has been overshadowed by a fresh row over his security, confusion over accommodation at Buckingham Palace and another high-profile legal battle with the British press. The Duke of Sussex travelled to London alone after plans for his wife, Meghan Markle, and their two children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, to accompany him reportedly fell through because the family was denied publicly funded police protection during the visit.

A source close to Harry said discussions over the remainder of the family’s travel plans were still ongoing, making it unclear whether Meghan and the children would later join him outside London. The visit marks Harry’s first trip to Britain in several months and was expected to be his first family visit to the UK in four years. However, concerns over security have continued to keep Meghan and the children away from Britain since the couple stepped down as senior members of the Royal Family in 2020 and relocated to California in the United States.

The security issue has remained one of the Duke’s biggest grievances with the British government. Harry lost his automatic entitlement to taxpayer-funded police protection after stepping back from royal duties. He has since argued in court that private security teams cannot access the same intelligence or policing resources as official officers, making it unsafe for him and his family to visit Britain. Last year, Harry said he could not safely bring his family to the UK following the dismissal of his legal challenge to restore his security arrangements.

“It is impossible for me to take my family back to the UK safely,” the Duke said after the ruling.

The latest trip has also been clouded by conflicting claims over accommodation. Harry’s spokesperson said an offer by King Charles III to stay at Buckingham Palace had been withdrawn at the last minute, describing the development as disappointing. Buckingham Palace, however, insisted the Duke had failed to meet the deadline for accepting the accommodation offer and therefore would not be staying at the royal residence.

It remains uncertain whether Harry will meet his father during the visit. The King, who continues to undergo treatment for cancer while carrying out public duties, is understood to have last met Harry at Clarence House in September 2025. Relations between father and son have remained strained in recent years despite occasional meetings.

Harry’s relationship with the Royal Family deteriorated sharply after he and Meghan left Britain in 2020. Tensions deepened following the couple’s televised interview with Oprah Winfrey, the release of their Netflix documentary series and Harry’s bestselling memoir, Spare, in which he disclosed private details about life inside the monarchy and his disagreements with senior royals, including his brother, Prince William.

Alongside family tensions, Harry’s latest UK visit coincides with a significant court ruling expected on Tuesday in his lawsuit against Associated Newspapers, publisher of the Daily Mail. The Duke, along with singer Elton John, actress Elizabeth Hurley and several other public figures, accused the newspaper publisher of unlawfully obtaining private information through illegal methods, including the use of private investigators.

The case forms part of Harry’s wider campaign against sections of the British tabloid press, which he has repeatedly blamed for intruding into his private life and contributing to the death of his mother, Princess Diana, who died in a car crash in Paris in 1997 while being pursued by paparazzi. Harry has won and settled several cases against British newspaper groups in recent years and has vowed to continue challenging what he describes as unlawful media practices.

According to his spokesperson, the refusal to provide publicly funded security forced the Duke to arrange private protection for the current visit, delaying confirmation of his accommodation plans. British media reports also suggested Buckingham Palace was cautious about hosting Harry while a court judgment involving one of his legal battles was pending, fearing that any perceived involvement by King Charles could raise constitutional concerns.

Despite the controversies surrounding the visit, Harry is expected to focus on promoting the Invictus Games, the international sporting event he founded in 2014 for wounded, injured and sick military personnel and veterans. The Games have become one of his most significant charitable achievements and remain central to his public work.
