Nigeria’s civil society community has launched a new digital platform aimed at strengthening electoral accountability and closing persistent gaps in the country’s electoral process ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The platform, known as the Situation Room Electoral Accountability Tracker (SEAT), was unveiled in Abuja by the Nigeria Civil Society Situation Room as part of efforts to deepen transparency and citizen participation.

Convener of the Situation Room, Yunusa Ya’u, said the initiative is designed to ensure that electoral accountability is sustained beyond election day and tracked across the entire electoral cycle.
He explained that weak implementation of post-election recommendations has continued to affect public confidence in the system, adding that SEAT will provide a structured mechanism to monitor reforms and stakeholder compliance.
According to him, the platform combines a web-based tracking system with a mobile application, allowing citizens to submit real-time reports while consolidating observer data into a unified national dashboard.
Ya’u added that the system will help identify recurring electoral challenges, assess reform progress, and generate periodic reports to guide policy direction and institutional improvements.
However, the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, cautioned that digital accountability tools must not undermine its constitutional role or become channels for misinformation in the electoral space.
Stakeholders and security officials, while expressing support for the initiative, called for strong verification systems and responsible data use, describing SEAT as a significant step toward improving electoral transparency if properly implemented.
