Catholics around the world gathered in prayer on Sunday for Pope Francis, who remains in critical condition at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital.
The Vatican confirmed that the 88-year-old pontiff’s ninth night in the hospital passed peacefully, though his health remains a major concern for the global Catholic community.
The Pope, who was admitted on February 14 with bronchitis that later developed into double pneumonia, suffered a prolonged respiratory attack on Saturday, requiring blood transfusions and high-flow oxygen.
Despite being alert and sitting in a chair, the Vatican has described his condition as critical, with doctors warning that he is “not out of danger.”
As news of his worsening health spread, Catholic faithful gathered in churches worldwide to offer prayers for his recovery. In St. Peter’s Basilica, Cardinal Rino Fisichella, who replaced Pope Francis in leading Sunday Mass, reassured believers that the Pope remained spiritually present despite his physical absence. “Even though he is in a hospital bed, we feel him close to us,” Fisichella said, urging the congregation to pray for the pontiff’s strength.
At St. John Lateran Basilica in Rome, Cardinal Vicar Baldo Reina led a special evening mass, calling on God to grant Pope Francis the endurance needed to overcome this health crisis.
Outside the Gemelli Hospital, nuns and priests from different countries gathered to sing and pray, as well-wishers lit candles near a statue of Pope John Paul II, another former patient of the hospital.
The Vatican has confirmed that Pope Francis will not deliver his usual Sunday Angelus prayer, with his message instead being published as it was last weekend. This marks a significant change for a Pope known for his tireless work ethic and public engagements.
Pope Francis has faced mounting health challenges in recent years, including colon surgery in 2021 and a hernia operation in 2023.
His mobility has also been affected by persistent hip and knee pain, requiring him to use a wheelchair frequently. While he has stated that the papacy is a lifelong role, his deteriorating condition has reignited speculation about a potential resignation, following the precedent set by Pope Benedict XVI in 2013.
As the Catholic world anxiously awaits further updates, prayers continue to pour in for Pope Francis, with many hoping he will overcome this latest health battle and resume his leadership of the Church.
