NHRC DEMANDS URGENT NATIONAL POLICY TO PROTECT CIVILIANS AMID RISING INSECURITY IN NIGERIA.

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has urged the Federal Government to adopt a comprehensive national policy on civilian protection, following a surge in terrorist and armed attacks across the country.
In a statement, the Commission extended condolences to the military and the governments of Borno, Niger, Benue, Kaduna, Kwara, Sokoto, Plateau, and other affected states, where communities have continued to endure repeated violence.

He highlighted incidents including coordinated assaults on military formations in the North-East, suicide bombings in markets and hospitals in Maiduguri, and mass killings in rural communities across Niger, Benue, and Kwara States.
The Commission also cited attacks on worshippers in Kaduna, as well as persistent violence in parts of Sokoto and Plateau States, describing the trend as a widening national security threat.

The NHRC warned that such attacks represent serious violations of the rights to life, dignity, and personal security, noting that both civilians and security operatives are increasingly under threat.
It therefore called on the Federal Government to establish a National Policy on the Protection of Civilians, grounded in human rights principles, with a focus on accountability, prevention, victim support, and strict compliance with international humanitarian laws.
