Ted Turner, the man widely credited with changing global television journalism forever, has died at the age of 87. His death was confirmed on Wednesday by Turner Enterprises after years of battling Lewy body dementia, a degenerative neurological disease he publicly disclosed in 2018.

Turner was best known as the founder of CNN, the world’s first 24-hour television news network. When he launched the station in 1980, many critics believed the idea of round-the-clock news would fail. However, CNN went on to revolutionize modern journalism, changing how breaking news is reported and consumed across the world.

Born on November 19, 1938, in Cincinnati, Ohio, Turner took over his father’s billboard business at a young age after his father’s death. Through determination and bold business decisions, he expanded into radio and television, eventually building one of the biggest media empires in America.

Apart from CNN, Turner also founded major television brands including TBS, TNT, Cartoon Network, and Turner Classic Movies. He transformed a small Atlanta television station into a global broadcasting powerhouse and helped shape cable television into what it is today.
CNN gained worldwide recognition during major international events such as the Gulf War, the fall of the Berlin Wall, and several global political crises. Turner’s vision allowed viewers to witness world events live and in real time, making television news faster and more immediate than ever before.

Known for his outspoken personality, Turner earned nicknames like “Captain Outrageous” and “The Mouth of the South.” Despite controversies surrounding some of his public comments over the years, many admired his fearless leadership and willingness to challenge traditional media structures.
Beyond broadcasting, Turner was also a respected philanthropist and environmental activist. In 1998, he donated $1 billion to establish the United Nations Foundation, one of the largest charitable donations ever made at the time. He also co-founded the Nuclear Threat Initiative; an organization focused on reducing global nuclear threats.

Turner was once married to Hollywood actress Jane Fonda, and their relationship attracted major public attention during the 1990s. He was also known for owning sports franchises, including the Atlanta Braves baseball team, helping to increase their popularity nationwide.

Tributes have continued to pour in from journalists, political leaders, broadcasters, and media organizations around the world. Many described Turner as a visionary who transformed journalism and changed the face of global television forever. CNN executives praised him as a fearless pioneer whose legacy would continue to inspire generations of journalists and broadcasters.

Even in death, Ted Turner’s influence on global media remains undeniable. From introducing 24-hour news coverage to building one of the most influential media empires in history, his legacy will continue to shape journalism and broadcasting for decades to come.
