DEMOCRACY MUST PROTECT EVERY CHILD: CYPF MARKS JUNE 12 DEMOCRACY DAY AND WORLD DAY AGAINST CHILD LABOUR

As Nigeria commemorates Democracy Day on June 12 and joins the global community in observing the World Day Against Child Labour, the Child and Youth Protection Foundation (CYPF) calls on government, institutions, communities, and citizens to reflect on the connection between democracy and the protection of children.

A democratic society is measured not only by free elections and good governance but also by how well it protects its most vulnerable citizens.Every child deserves access to education, healthcare, safety, and opportunities to thrive. Unfortunately, millions of children across Nigeria continue to face the harsh realities of child labour, denying them their fundamental rights and robbing them of their future.

As we celebrate the sacrifices of those who fought for Nigeria’s democracy, we must also renew our commitment to building a nation where no child is forced into labour instead of learning, growing, and realizing their full potential. Democracy should create an environment where children are protected from exploitation and empowered through quality education and social support systems.

The theme of this year’s World Day Against Child Labour serves as a reminder that ending child labour requires collective action. Governments must strengthen policies and enforcement mechanisms, parents and guardians must prioritize education, and communities must remain vigilant in protecting children from abuse, trafficking, and exploitation.

CYPF believes that the future of Nigeria’s democracy depends on the wellbeing of today’s children. A nation that invests in its children invests in sustainable development, social justice, and lasting democratic values. On this important day, we urge all stakeholders to work together to create a Nigeria where every child is free to dream, learn, and succeed without the burden of labour or exploitation.

Happy Democracy Day, Nigeria. Together, let us build a nation where democracy works for every child.
