Former U.S. president Jimmy Carter dies at 100

Former United States President Jimmy Carter has died, his family announced on Sunday.

Mr Carter passed after spending a year at a hospice facility in his home state of Georgia for over a year. He was 100.

Mr Carter had suffered several health crises and was repeatedly transported to hospitals over the past few years until he decided with his family to abandon medical attention in early 2023.

Born on October 1, 1924, Mr Carter was the 39th president of the U.S., elected in 1976, and served the country for one term until 1981. He also served as Georgia’s 76th governor from 1971 to 1975 as a member of the Democratic Party.

The former U.S. leader was a friend of former Nigerian president Olusegun Obasanjo, and a bridge in Nigeria was also named after him in downtown Lagos.

Among his successes was the handing over of the Panama Canal to Panama in the 1970s, an arrangement implemented decades later. He won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002 for fostering global peace.
