Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, the first woman and African to lead the World Trade Organization (WTO), will seek a second four-year term when her current mandate expires in August 2025, her spokesman confirmed on Monday.
“Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala has officially announced her intention to seek a second term as Director-General of the WTO,” said spokesman Ismaila Dieng, citing widespread support from WTO members.
Her decision was communicated to WTO chair, Norwegian Ambassador Petter Olberg, and the WTO’s African Group has formally requested her re-nomination, with no other candidates emerging so far.
Okonjo-Iweala, who began her tenure in March 2021, has focused on revitalizing the 166-member organization, drawing on her experience as Nigeria’s former foreign and finance minister.
