Breaking: ICPC Grants Compassionate Bail to Nasir El-Rufai

Former Governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai, has been granted temporary bail from the custody of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).

The development was confirmed on Friday by his son, Bashir El-Rufai, who shared the update via 𝕏, expressing gratitude for the support received during the period of detention.

According to reports, the former governor was released to allow him attend the funeral of his mother, Hajiya Umma El-Rufai, who passed away in Cairo on Friday.

Although the ICPC is yet to issue an official statement, an aide to El-Rufai confirmed that the release was approved on compassionate grounds following the family’s loss.

El-Rufai has been in ICPC custody since February 18, 2026, over allegations of financial misappropriation during his tenure as governor between 2015 and 2023. He is also facing charges related to alleged money laundering.

Prior to his detention by the ICPC, he was questioned by the Department of State Services (DSS) over claims involving the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu.

Earlier in the week, a Federal High Court sitting in Kaduna denied him bail and adjourned the case to March 31, 2026, after hearing arguments from both the prosecution and his legal counsel, Ukpon Akpan.
The case remains ongoing.
