Suspected bandits have shot dead a health worker, Akinola Oyabiyi, in the Eleyewo area of Akure North LGA, Ondo state.
Mr Oyabiyi was killed while returning home from his office on Tuesday around 8 p.m., a family source who spoke in confidence told reporters in Akure on Friday.
He said the health worker ran into the bandits, who had laid siege to the road.
“He (Oyabiyi) was driving home in his vehicle when he ran into the bandits who had already waylaid the road.
“But in an attempt to escape from the kidnappers, they shot him, and he died instantly because the bullet hit him in his stomach. When I saw the video, I could not watch it. He was soaked in his own blood,” the source said.
According to him, the corpse of Mr Oyabiyi has been deposited at the morgue of a private hospital in the state.
The scene of the attack was a few meters away from Akure airport.
Funmilayo Odunlami-Omisanya, the police spokesperson in the state, confirmed the incident in a chat with our reporter, saying the tactical teams of the state police command are on the trail of the armed bandits.
“The command’s tactical teams are on the trail of the assailants, and we urge family members of victims to please endeavour to report such incident(s) as it happens,” Mrs Odunlami-Omisanya said.
The incident comes barely a week after suspected bandits attacked a farm in the same Akure North LGA, killing five farmers and two labourers.
