Multiple Lives Lost In Oyo Carnival Stampede – Governor Makinde

A tragic stampede at a carnival in the Bashorun area of Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, has resulted in multiple fatalities and injuries. While the exact number of casualties remains uncertain, viral videos have shown children among the victims of the incident, which occurred on Wednesday.

Governor Seyi Makinde confirmed the unfortunate event in a statement, expressing deep sorrow and extending condolences to the grieving families.

“Earlier today, an incident occurred at Islamic High School Basorun, the venue of a family-oriented event. Sadly, a stampede at the venue led to multiple losses of life and injuries,” Makinde said. “This is a very sad day for us in Oyo State. We sympathize with the parents whose joy has been turned into mourning by this tragedy.”

Governor Makinde assured the public that the state government is taking all necessary steps to prevent further casualties. Security personnel have been deployed to restore order at the venue, while medical teams and ambulances are actively providing assistance to victims.

In his statement, Governor Makinde revealed that the event organizers have been arrested and will face prosecution.

“While investigations are ongoing, the primary organizers of the event have been taken into custody. I want to assure our people that anyone directly or indirectly responsible for this tragedy will be held accountable,” the governor said.

He urged the public to remain calm as security agencies continue their investigations and reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring justice for those affected.

“Our hearts remain with the families and loved ones impacted by this disaster. May the souls of the departed rest in peace,” he added.

Dotun Oyelade, the Oyo State Commissioner for Information and Orientation, disclosed that the injured have been taken to various hospitals across Ibadan. He advised concerned parents to visit specific medical facilities to locate their children, armed with valid identification.

Patnas Hospital, Basorun

Western Hospital, Basorun

Ringroad State Hospital

Molly Specialist Hospital

University College Hospital (UCH)

This tragedy underscores the importance of safety and crowd management during large gatherings. Governor Makinde assured the public that the government would learn from this incident to prevent future occurrences.
